WV Community Development Racial Equity Fellow at The WV Community Development Hub

The Hub mobilizes residents from all over the state to spark transformational change and progress in their communities. The Hub believes that in order to build strong, vibrant communities, we must be intentional about building places where everyone is safe and welcomed, everyone has equal access to opportunity, and everyone stands united in community together.

SUMMARY

The WV Community Development Hub (The Hub) is seeking a WV Community Development Racial Equity Fellow through the Generation WV Impact Fellowship Program.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead the organization’s internal racial equity development work, and to support the staff in more deeply engaging rural communities of color and supporting the development of racial equity efforts within the community development field.

The Hub believes that in order to build strong, vibrant communities, we must be intentional about building places where everyone is safe and welcomed, everyone has equal access to opportunity, and everyone stands united in community together. In 2020, our staff and board formally recognized that racial equity is a central element to fully realizing this vision in West Virginia. In 2021, through the leadership of a Community Development Racial Equity Fellow, we hope to build a clearer understanding of the challenges to realizing this vision across West Virginia communities and determining actionable pathways to serve as both an ally and a positive force for change. We are committed to doing the work to build an organization that is committed to racial equity, both internally and externally.

The Hub mobilizes residents from all over the state to spark transformational change and progress in their communities. Hallmarks of the organization’s work are to spur on fresh momentum where little exists; to unite the forces of groups that have not considered – or even resisted – collaboration in the past; and to champion new, and sometimes unexpected, leaders. Over the past year, The Hub has worked directly with 21 communities across the state and 40% of West Virginians were positively impacted by Hub-related projects. JOB DUTIES

  • Work with consultant to lead organizational racial equity audit, including guiding the creation and implementation of work to advance racial equity policies and practices for the organization and its services
  • Build and implement a plan to support bringing programming and services into alignment with diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices to achieve organizational goal of more deeply engaging and supporting rural communities of color, including setting measurable markers for successful community engagement and impact
  • Work with the organization’s Executive Leadership Team to evaluate and improve internal organizational processes to attract more staff and board members of color and support their engagement and leadership development continuously
  • Lead all internal racial equity efforts, establishing best practice guidelines and setting a vision for the work that supports the organization in bringing diversity, equity, and inclusion best
    practices into its internal operating structures (including organization culture, hiring, board leadership and other areas)
  • Working with The Hub team, advise on public communications, including voice, tone, and messaging, to support The Hub communicating progress updates and findings related to racial equity work to partners and the general public
  • Build relationships with leaders working to advance racial equity in West Virginia, including leaders within government, nonprofit, business, and philanthropic sectors as well as faith-based and rural community groups
  • Build relationships with leaders working to advance racial equity in rural areas across America

EXPERIENCE + SKILLS

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, including strong listening skills, a clear understanding of when to step forward into conversations and when to step back, as well as a strong interest in seeking out and developing new personal connections
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing racial equity and inclusion, as well as a baseline understanding of historic barriers to racial equity and inclusion, including how they present in rural areas at the individual, community, and systemic levels
  • Baseline knowledge of strategies to address barriers to equity and inclusion
  • Strong copywriting and editing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a project, setting vision, measurable goals and adapting to emergent challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to complete tasks and follow-through on requests
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and strong initiative skills
  • Educational background including research and analysis a plus, but not required
  • Must be energetic, positive, imaginative, well-organized, and capable of functioning effectively in an independent environment and on a small team

SALARY/BENEFITS

  • The salary for this position will be negotiated with the applicant and will be based on qualifications and experience. Expected starting salary will be between $31,000-36,000.
  • This position is full-time. This position will start as a remote work-from-home position, in accordance with Hub COVID-related policies. When Hub staff return to the office later this year, this position is expected to be based out of The Hub’s Charleston WV office. Placement in an alternative office or permanent remote placement will be considered for exceptional candidates.
  • Limited travel is expected for this position. All travel expenses are reimbursable and travel may often be done in coordination with other Hub staff. Willingness to travel and work flexible hours is required for this position. All travel will be done in accordance with Hub COVID-related travel policies.
